Looking for answers about the new Game of Thrones prequel? We’ve got you covered. Check out answers to some of your most frequently asked questions:

Is House of the Dragon a prequel to Game of Thrones?

Yes, the series is a prequel with Ryan J. Condal (Rampage and Hercules) and Miguel Sapohnik (whom you may remember from Game of Thrones favorite episodes “Battle of the Bastards,”“Hardhome,” and more) at the helm. Author George R.R. Martin is also actively involved as an executive producer.

What is House of the Dragon based on?

Game of Thrones is based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, but House of the Dragon is based on his “history” book, Fire & Blood. The book is credited as written by an Archmaester of Westeros, with various accounts on what happened during the Targaryen reign.

What is House of the Dragon about?

If you watched Game of Thrones you of course remember the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen, and her quest to take back the Iron Throne. From that period, House of the Dragon brings us back nearly 200 years to the time in Westerosi history when House Targaryen was at the height of its power. The series begins with the reign of King Viserys I, the fifth Targaryen ruler, the question of his succession, and the events that unfold after he names his daughter, Rhaenyra, heir — a title a woman had never assumed.

Where does House of the Dragon fall in the Game of Thrones timeline?

The House of the Dragon timeline picks up approximately 172 years prior to the birth of Daenerys Stormborn and the death of her father the Mad King, Aerys – the last Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne before Game of Thrones begins.

Where is the show set?

Like its predecessor, much of House of the Dragon takes place in Westeros, with familiar settings like King’s Landing and Dragonstone, but keep an eye out for some new locations we’ve never seen before. Explore the Official Map to get a sense of where everything is.

Who are the major Houses?

Starks, Baratheons, Lannisters… you may see them here and there in House of the Dragon but the biggest players in the series — alongside the Targaryens — are two new names: the Hightowers and the Velaryons. Learn more about these houses and the time period in the videos below.

How many dragons are in the show?

Over the course of the series viewers could see up to 17 different dragons. As they are introduced, be sure to visit the Official Dragon Index for a quick look at which dragon is which.

What happens in the Dance of the Dragons?

The “Dance of the Dragons” is the civil war that ensued between the Targaryens. Thrones fans may recall when young Shireen Baratheon and Ser Davos briefly discuss the battle as she reads a history book about it. If you want to see how that part of Targaryen history unfolds, you’ll have to keep an eye on House of the Dragon.
