Julian Fellowes’ ‘The Gilded Age’ Announces Its Cast
What’s it about? It’s 1882 and the Gilded Age is in full swing when Marian Brook, a young orphaned daughter of a Southern general, moves in with her rigidly conventional aunts in New York City. With the help of Peggy Scott, an African-American woman masquerading as her maid, Marian gets caught up in the dazzling lives of her rich neighbors as she struggles to decide between adhering to the rules or forging her own path.
Who’s behind the camera? Julian Fellowes — best known for creating, writing and executive-producing the award-winning Downton Abbey — is the creator, writer and executive producer on the series. Fellow Downton Abbey alums Gareth Neame and Michael Engler will executive-produce. Engler, who’s also set to direct, previously worked on HBO series Sex and the City, True Blood, Deadwood and Six Feet Under.
What should I watch while I wait? For more dramas about times of great change, try Parade’s End, a five-part series starring Benedict Cumberbatch about the onset of World War I; John Adams, starring Paul Giamatti as the titular founding father; and The Deuce, about the rise of the porn industry in 1970s New York.
